What is RoboSats and how does Ammanaya fit in?+
RoboSats is an open-source P2P exchange protocol for buying and selling Bitcoin over the Lightning Network. Ammanaya is a coordinator — an independent node that facilitates trades. Think of RoboSats as the protocol and Ammanaya as one of the servers you can trade through.
Do I need to create an account?+
No. RoboSats generates a random robot identity for you — no email, no phone, no personal data. Your robot token is your only credential. Save it to recover your robot later.
What wallet do I need?+
You need a Lightning wallet that supports hold invoices. Recommended: Phoenix, Zeus, Blixt, Electrum, Alby. Wallet of Satoshi works but is custodial. Check the full compatibility list.
What is a fidelity bond?+
A fidelity bond is a small amount of sats (default 3% of the trade) locked via a Lightning hold invoice. It guarantees both parties are serious. The bond is returned after a successful trade. It's only forfeited if you abandon or try to cheat.
What is a hold invoice?+
A hold invoice is a special Lightning invoice that locks your sats without spending them. The payment is "held" by the coordinator and only settled (spent) or cancelled (returned) based on the outcome of the trade. This is how RoboSats achieves non-custodial escrow.
What are the fees?+
Maker fee: 0.02% (the person who creates the order)
Taker fee: 0.17% (the person who takes the order)
Total: 0.19% per trade. 50% of fees are donated to RoboSats development.
What is the premium?+
The premium is the percentage above or below the current Bitcoin market price. 0% = market price. +5% means the buyer pays 5% more than market (good for sellers). -2% means a discount (good for buyers). It's set by the order creator and determines how attractive the offer is.
Why do I need Tor?+
Tor hides your IP address and location. Since the goal is private, no-KYC trading, using Tor is essential. The Ammanaya coordinator is only accessible via Tor (onion address) — there's no clearnet access by design.
What happens if there's a dispute?+
Either party can open a dispute if something goes wrong. The coordinator reviews the evidence from the trade chat and makes a fair decision. The dishonest party loses their bond. Disputes are rare — the bond system incentivizes honest behavior.
Can I cancel an order?+
Before someone takes it: Yes, free cancellation — your bond is returned immediately.
After someone takes it: Cancellation is possible if both parties agree (collaborative cancel). If only you want to cancel, you may lose your bond.
What payment methods are supported?+
Any payment method agreed between buyer and seller. Common ones: Bizum, Revolut, bank transfer (SEPA), PayPal, Wise, N26, and more. The coordinator doesn't restrict payment methods — that's between you and your trading partner.
How long does a trade take?+
Once both parties are matched: typically 5-30 minutes depending on the fiat payment method. Instant methods like Bizum or Revolut are fastest. Bank transfers may take longer. The waiting time for someone to take your order varies — from minutes to hours.
Is there a minimum/maximum trade amount?+
Minimum: 1,000 sats
Maximum: 250,000 sats (this limit increases over time as the coordinator builds reputation in the federation)
